Sakyamuni was the founder of Buddhism.
Gautama was his surname and Siddhartha was his given name. Sakya was the
name of the clan, which means "able"; Muni means "benevolence" and
"quietness" and Sakymuni means "sage of the Sakyas". The founder of Buddhism
is highly esteemed to be Buddha (the Awakened). "Sakyamuni" is an honorable
form of address used by his disciples.
