Rawalpindi-Islamabad: between bazaars and bureaucrats

Karachi being too far from everything, it was decided in the 1950s to build a new capital near Rawalpindi and the summer hill stations. Islamabad may be the capital, but in a country that has been ruled by the military for most of this life, Pindi is still the centre. Jokers will tell you that the best thing about the capital is that it's only 15km from Pakistan...

Rawalpindi

The city came into its own after the Sikh Wars of the 1840s, as the largest cantonment in Asia (cantonments were the tidy residential-military-administrative enclaves built next to major British colonial towns). Astride the Grand Trunk Road, Rawalpindi is today the Pakistan Army HQ.

Islamabad

By contrast, where Islamabad stands there was nothing 40 years ago. To avoid urban chaos and decay, the architect's idea was to let it grow in only one direction, sector by sector across a grid, each sector having its own residences, shops and parks. Construction began in 1961 and will go on for decades.

Shah Faisal Mosque

Incredibly opulent, marble-faced mosque said to be Asia's biggest, with room for 100,000 worshippers. Most of the USD50m it cost was a gift from King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

Great moments!

Refus.
