Khunjerab Top (4730m)

A steady trickle of horseback commerce crossed the Khunjerab until the 1950s, when China-Pakistan hostility closed the border. By the mid-1960s the two countries had made amends and set to work on a road over the pass. The Khunjerab Top was opened to official traffic and trade in 1982, and to tourists in 1986. The pass itself is long and flat. At the summit is a plaque commerorating the opening. At this point, one is about 400km from Kashgar and 880km from Rawalpindi

L'afghane aux yeux verts

En 1984 lors de la prise du cliché publié l'annèe d'après, l'orpheline avait douze ans et des yeux verts pénétrants. Sa photo en couverture de National Geographic est devenue le portrait le plus connu publié par le journal en 114 d'existence. Et c'est ce meme photographe qui a retrouvé Sharbat Gula dans une région isolée d'Afghanistan. Le photographe Steve McCurry n'avait pas noté le nom de la jeune fille rencontrée dans un camp de réfugiés de Nasir Bagh au Pakistan. L'équipe de National Geographic a recouru à plusieurs techniques d'identification, y compris la reconnaissance de l'iris pour retrouver la jeune femme. (Métro, 15 mai 2002)

Beaucoup de check points. On m'appelle Mr. Help. Deuxième partie de la KKH. Marmottes brunes, jaunes, très curieuses.

Col du Khunjerab avec deux cowboys lunettes de soleil et motos. Déjeuner pic-nic au 1er check point après le Kunjerab. J'écoute le bruit de la rivière, elle me berce. Magma rocheux au-dessus. Immobile, on dirait que ces dieux, ces monstres vont se mettre à bouger. Fantastique arc-en-ciel. Hotel bof sauf la vue. Projets de trekking mais plutot l'hotel Darbar alors (2500 ruppees pour une double).

Mountains with razor-edge summits and bare walls drop sheer to the river, and the wind drives up the valleys even on brilliant days. The highest point of the 'cathedral' ridge across the river is 6106m Tupopdan (Wakhi for 'hot rock', because in winter its slopes shed the snow quickly). On lower slopes are messages, spelled out with painted rocks dating from the Aga Khan's 1987 visit to Gojal.
